Simple Plant Care & Quiet Reflections

How I Built a Thriving Terrarium (and Why I Didn’t Expect to Love It)

I didn’t expect to love my terrarium this much…

By Rootbound Lauren

I really thought it would just be something small… something decorative.

But it didn’t stay that way for long.

It started in a small glass jar, and it grew so fast that I ended up moving it into a bigger one.

I got so excited about it that I even took small cuttings from the plants inside and made a smaller one for my nana… and now I already know I’m going to make one for my sister too. It just feels like something I can’t keep to myself. 🌿

It’s honestly amazing how the plants thrive inside of it.

I have a mix of things in there... some kind of ivy, a lightning jewel orchid (which is definitely my favorite), a rainbow fern, and even a random little clover that used to be growing in one of my hoyas.

And somehow… they all just work together.

This has quickly become one of my favorite planty things to look at in my home.

I catch myself looking at it every single day… which kind of surprised me, because I never expected it to become my favorite thing.

And the wildest part about it is, if I tried to grow any of these plants out in normal house conditions, they would probably shrivel up and die.

But put them all together in a little enclosed space with some sphagnum moss… and it’s like a completely different world.

When I finally move into a bigger home one day, I already know I want to make a huge version of this… maybe even using one of those closed IKEA cabinets. It feels like a big project, but also something that would be so worth it. I actually got the idea from one of my favorite planty YouTubers, and it’s been stuck in my head ever since.

I’ve seen some people use beneficial bugs in their terrariums to help control algae and things like that… but for mine, I’ve just been using charcoal chips, and it’s been working really well to keep everything from getting moldy or gross inside.

Honestly, I barely have to do anything to it. I keep it in a bright spot, and I only mist it every once in a while.

Not sure what this is, I call it an ivy, but I think it's something else, regardless, it is growing so well it looks fake!

I didn’t realize how much I needed something like this.

I already had a home full of plants… and I love all of them for different reasons. But this just feels different.

It surprised me.

I didn’t expect it to turn into this…
but I’m really glad it did 🌿

If you wanted to create something like this…

If you’ve been thinking about making your own terrarium, it’s honestly a lot simpler than I thought it would be.

This is a basic version of what I used:

I didn’t expect it to turn into what it did… but this setup has worked really well for me.

If you've been wanting to try something like this, this is a good place to start.
