Simple Plant Care & Quiet Reflections

From Rootbound to Thriving: Why I Stopped Overcomplicating Plant Care

How a grocery store pothos, a season of burnout, and nearly 200 houseplants taught me that less is often more.

By Rootbound Lauren

It all started with a pothos from the grocery store back in 2019.

I had just moved into my home and wanted so badly not to kill this plant. After a week or two, it was still alive and kicking, and I was pleasantly surprised. So I kept going.

One plant turned into two.

Two turned into ten.

And before I knew it, I had become completely obsessed.

I loved everything about plants. Buying them, watching new leaves emerge, learning their names, and filling my home with greenery. Every new leaf felt like a tiny victory.

OG Pothos, spends her summers on my shaded, west facing porch.

Like many new plant parents, I wanted to do everything right. I watched YouTube videos, read plant care books, joined Facebook groups, and followed plant people on Instagram. The problem was that everyone had a different answer.

One person said to water every week.

Another said never water on a schedule.

One person swore by a certain soil mix.

Another said it was terrible.

Some people said grow lights were essential, while others said natural light was enough.

It was just way too much information.

The more I learned, the more overwhelmed I became.

Eventually, life happened.

I went through a period where I was struggling with depression and had to focus my energy on other things. For the first time, I wasn't hovering over my plants every day. I wasn't constantly moving them around, checking them, watering them, or trying to improve them.

And something unexpected happened.

They started thriving...

Hoya compacta, chilling on the porch, this is their fave place.

I remember looking around and noticing new leaves everywhere. Plants that I thought needed constant attention were growing beautifully without me fussing over them.

I noticed the same thing every time I went on vacation.

I would leave for several days and come home to a jungle of new growth. It was almost as if the plants were celebrating the fact that I had finally left them alone.

That's when something clicked.

Most plants don't need more attention.

They need the right conditions and a little trust.

That realization completely changed the way I care for plants.

Today I care for nearly 200 houseplants while working a full-time job and raising five children. People often ask me how I keep up with so many plants, and the truth is that I don't spend all day taking care of them.

In fact, I do less now than I did when I only had a handful.

Most days I simply admire them.

My entire approach comes down to a few simple principles:

  • Let the soil get dry.

  • Focus on lighting before anything else.

  •  Observe before reacting.

  •  Don't panic over every yellow leaf.

  •  Stop overcomplicating plant care.

Over time, friends and family started coming to me with plant questions. They would send photos of struggling plants and ask what they were doing wrong. More often than not, the solution wasn't complicated. They just needed someone to help simplify the situation.

That's ultimately why I created my free Houseplant Care Guide.

I wanted to take everything I had learned and put it into a simple format that would help people feel less overwhelmed and more confident.

And it's also why I created Rootbound to Thriving.Rootbound to Thriving is a one-on-one consultation where we look at your specific situation and simplify it together.
