Simple Plant Care & Quiet Reflections

From glitter and glam to greenery: Why everyone needs a hobby

Not Just a Plant Girl

By Rootbound Lauren

If you've been following along here for a while, you know me as a plant person. But I wasn't always this way… and honestly, the journey of how I got here is something I've been wanting to share.

When I first moved into my home, I started noticing pieces of decor I absolutely loved…  but the price tags? Not so much. So instead of paying for them, I decided to try making them myself. And then something funny happened: it got fun. Like, really fun. Before I knew it, I wasn't just recreating things I'd seen in stores…I was creating.

I made Z Gallerie-inspired glitter paintings, wall mirrors, coffee table trays, glam wall sconces. I even made a fur hallway bench that I still have to this day. My style was bold, glam, and completely mine.

My furry hallway bench, we keep our shoes under it and extra blankets on top.

And then, once my home finally looked and felt exactly the way I wanted it to,  I started filling it with plants. Looking back, it makes perfect sense. The decor was the shell. The plants brought it to life.

But here's what I really want to talk about: how much those hobbies have meant to me, beyond just the finished product.

Whether it was painting a canvas at midnight or watching a new leaf unfurl on one of my plants…  there is something so deeply satisfying about creating something or caring for something and watching it grow. It gives you a sense of purpose. Something to look forward to. That feeling of I made that or I kept that alive… it's hard to explain, but if you've felt it, you know.

My son loves to go fishing, and I think it's exactly the same thing for him. It doesn't matter what the hobby is…  fishing, reading, painting, gardening, whatever calls to you. The act of doing something you enjoy, something that is fully yours, is basically a dopamine boost. And in a world that moves as fast as this one does, we all need that.

So if you've been putting off picking up something you used to love, or you've been curious about something new, this is your sign. Find your thing. Tend to it. Let it grow.

Mine just happens to have leaves. 🌿

The Glitter Era...

If you made it to the end of this post, we're probably already kindred spirits. I share everything here... my plants, my home, my journey, and every now and then, a little piece of my story like this one. If you want to be the first to know when something new goes up, sign up for by clicking here.
